Soweto was the place to be on Wednesday, 24 May 2017, as the long awaited and highly anticipated McDonald’s U/14 Schools League big kick-off took place at Anchor High School in Orlando West
Learners in and around the area, came to watch as their fellow peers showed off their soccer skills and challenged one another for a spot in the finals of this prestigious league.
The budding soccer stars and community got to rub shoulders with the country’s most accomplished soccer legends who have been roped in to form part of the commitment by McDonald’s in partnership with South African Schools Football Association (SASFA), for this league. The coaches who made an appearance at Wednesday’s activities in Soweto: soccer legends Doctor Khumalo, Mark Williams, Phil Masinga, Siphiwe Khoza and Tebogo Mokoena, led by head coach Khabo Zondo.
“We are excited about the future of football, seeing the talent displayed here proves that we are heading in the right direction. We hope to see a Soweto team in the national finals this year,” said Master Mohasoa the SASFA area representative.
Now in its 8th year, the McDonald’s U/14 Schools League continues with the soccer festivals where provincial teams will travel to selected provinces and play their finals, under the theme “Small teams, Big dreams’’.
The schools played the league phase of the tournament in the area and point system was used. They have two more games to play before they play their inter-district knockout.
The McDonald’s U/14 Schools League has given a platform to some of the country’s top young talent, some of whom are currently at the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea.
